The first Friday we were in Utah, my Dad had the afternoon off and asked us if we wanted to do something together. He told us to let Titan choose where he wanted to go for lunch and an activity. I knew if I let Titan choose the restaurant for lunch he would select Panda Express…again! 🙂 So I choose Guadalahonkey’s for lunch (I LOVE and crave their smothered bean burrito) and then Titan selected The Living Planet Aquarium for our activity. He had heard they had moved into a new location and wanted to check it out.
The last time I had visited aquarium was about 10 years ago when they were brand new to the Utah valley and located downtown in Gateway in a teeny tiny end part of the mall! At the time I thought, “They are never going to last!” Boy was I wrong! 🙂 Over the years they have definitely gotten bigger and A LOT better!
Their newest location is in Draper, UT right off of the freeway and it is a huge building. I was so surprised by how much they had!

After exploring the Utah section where we got to watch some cute otters and learn more about animals in Utah, we moved onto the Antarctic Adventure area. That area is home to the penguins and it was definitely one of Titan’s favorite areas. He loved watching the penguins swim around and interact with each other.
I noticed as we were leaving that they have a Penguin Encounter where you can actually go in a room and interact with the penguins. It costs $24.95 for non members and I think we may have to do it the next time we are in Utah. Hoping I can find a discount on it somehow though! 🙂
When Titan was ready to leave the penguins, it was off to the Journey to South America area where we got to see a lot of really fun reptiles and birds.
They also had this fun net walk way that all the kids loved going through.

Last but not least, Titan noticed Tuki’s Play Center and requested we finish off our afternoon with some time in there. Titan had fun running around and playing… and Broc and Chayse enjoyed some rest and relaxation. 🙂
One of Ti’s favorite parts of the play center was this interactive game board they had on the floor. It would pop up with different games and by moving around, you could control the ball or puck or whatever was needed for the game.
Titan asked if we could get this for our home one day. LOL I’m sure it’s only a few thousands dollars… 😉
About half way through Titan’s play time in the play center, Chayse was ready for a diaper change and to be nursed so we made our way to Mother’s Room on the first floor. I was really surprised and happy they had a room like that! It was quiet and out of the way from all of the regular restrooms and even had a couch in it for comfortable nursing and sitting. So if you have an infant with you when you go, make sure to keep an eye out for this room.
All in all, we were really impressed with the new location and building. (I guess it’s not really THAT new anymore. But it was new to us!) Titan was able to learn and see a lot and he LOVED their play area.
I did feel it was expensive for a single visit, but they offer a Family Membership that I would totally get if we lived in the Salt Lake Valley. Especially since we are a home schooling family and I would love to be able to take Titan once a month to study a few of the animals more in depth. When we lived in Colorado Springs, we got a membership to their zoo and every time we would go Titan would come home fascinated by a different animal and wanting to learn more about that animal. I’m sure the aquarium would be the same.
When I did the math, for our little family to go once (with the military discount) it was right around $50.00. To get memberships for all of us though would be about $160.00 (again with the military discount). And if you are a member you get into Tuki’s Play Center for free every time you go, a discount on things like the Penguin Encounter and unlimited free 4D theater tickets! (We didn’t see the 4D movie that was playing when we were there, but it looked like a fun experience!) So if you live in the area and think you might go more than once, I’d definitely look at going the membership route from the beginning. For our family, we’d have to go only four times throughout the year to make the membership worth it. And I could see us going way more than that in the colder months just to take advantage of Tuki’s Play Center and get some wiggles out. 🙂
PS: The Living Planet Aquarium did not sponsor or pay for this post in any way. They don’t even know who I am! Just sharing our experience when we visited on our vacation. 🙂
