yesterday we celebrated titan’s 3rd birthday by inviting some of his friends over for a cars 2 birthday party.

a few lessons were learned with this party, which actually is the first “friends party” we have thrown for titan:

  • first, when planning on how many kids to invite, keep in mind your location and the time of year. originally we had planned on inviting 12-15 kids, but then at the last minute i decided to only invite 5 of his friends. if we were living in our own home, i probably would have gone full steam ahead with a large group of kids & it would have been ok, but since we are at my in-laws & the home is not as “child proofed” as most homes with toddlers, and is technically not our home with our own stuff, a smaller number was better. easier to do crowd control. 🙂
  • juice boxes are a genius idea with kids this age! i was going to serve soda in cute cars cups, but saw some juicy juice boxes that were cars themed and went with those instead. very glad i did. so much easier to clean up & no worrying about cups getting knocked over.
  • balloons are a hit with 3 year olds. before i the party i blew up probably 20-30 balloons and just scattered them around the living room. as the kids were arriving & in between activities the kids all had a blast playing with the balloons. it was a great distraction & crowd pleaser.
  • grocery store bakery cakes are gross, at least in my opinion. will be making the cake next year. even though the cars themed cake was very cute, the lack of taste was awful.
  • do not trust oriental tradings “estimated arrival date” or assume that since you are paying $20 extra for 2 day shipping that you will get it in the 2-3 days. next year will be ordering the party supplies a month in advance.
  • 90 minutes is more than long enough for a party at this age when attention spans are short. contemplated doing a 2 hour party & am so glad we didn’t.
  • target & michael’s are awesome places to get the swag bag favors for under $1.00!
  • and the last lesson, when you purchase helium balloons for the “decorations” make sure to purchase one extra for your child to play with so that a full blown melt down doesn’t occur 5 minutes before the party starts. yes, that happened.
overall the party was a success and the boys all seemed to have a lot of fun! i’m already brainstorming next year’s party! 🙂

ps. the VIP pass around titan’s next in the picture above was actually the party invite. will have a close up photo in the next post, as well as lots more photo’s from the actual party.
