that’s right, let’s talk about what it’s in our fridge and freezer and how long it should technically remain there…
i don’t know how many times in a month i’m questioning how long something has been open, how long it’s been considered leftovers or even, “do i really need to follow the expiration date on eggs?”
so when i came across the following tips in natural health magazine, i thought i should pay attention. here is what all the lingo means on your food:
“best buy” means that before the date on the package the food is at it’s BEST quality. it’s at it’s highest guarantee for freshness and quality, after that date it may not necessarily be bad, but it may not be at it’s best! this guideline is usually on dairy and other fresh food.
“use by” is a strong recommendation, not a command, to toss it after printed date. this mean you can probably let these items go a little longer in your fridge unless of course you’re dealing with meat! then don’t take your chances, toss it after the use by date.
“sell by” this simply lets the store know when they should sell the product by or pull it off the shelfs. you are usually ok to use the item for a little bit after the sell by date if it’s been packaged & stored correctly at the right temperatures and such. although if something looks or smells nasty, don’t take your chances. you have your sight and smell for a reason! 🙂
“expiration date” this means that the date printed is the last date you should use the item! the only exception is if the item has been frozen, if that’s the case you have bought yourself more time. if you are freezing items make sure to mark them and follow a “first in, first out” rule of thumb.
here are some other guidelines and popular food items:
yogurt, sour cream & cheese: use up to three days past the “sell by” date, if kept refrigerated.
milk & cream: use by the “sell by” date if kept refrigerated.
eggs: use up to three to five weeks from the purchase date, if kept refrigerated.
fresh meats: use within a few days of the purchase date, or freeze. unless it’s cured ham, which lasts five to seven days.
