where, oh where, are the days going? i can’t believe i’m already to the fourth week of my list. this week the focus is on keeping it simple.
such a (dare i say) simple statement and yet so so hard at times to actually do. i am “details” kind of gal myself. i notice details. i am constantly aware of the tiniest insesiest details. like a flower arrangement in the lobby on an episode of house, or the shoes someone is wearing, or how a person’s hair is curled or do they have acrylic nails versus just manicured nails, or whether or not i like a painting in a movie scene. i could go on and on about aesthetic details i notice about people, situations and my surroundings.
i’m starting to realize though that while details are important, if you focus on them too much you can get lost and not see the BIG picture. you can miss really being present and aware. you can miss having an truly authentic experience with the people in your life or events in your life because you’re too caught up in the details. details have a time and place, but there comes a time when you just need to be.
there comes a point in time where you just need to let go and live. you need to throw caution to the wind and just do it. on sunday we had a snow day and i spent some time with the little man outside, i was teaching him how to make snow angels and contemplated making one myself but then instantly had a list of five reasons why i shouldn’t get in the snow. then it hit me, did i really want those reasons to be more important than playing with my son and creating a moment with my son? no. definitely not. so into the snow me and my freshly straighened hair went! i decided not to let straightened hair get in the way of giggling with my son while we “payed owside”.
i think too often we get too caught up in thinking “what if?” instead of “why not?” we complicate our lives by holding too much onto the past and worrying way too much about the future. we don’t have time to really live in the present because we’re too busy dealing with what’s happened and what might happen, which is actually quite funny because we can’t do anything about the past, and the future hasn’t even happened yet, so why in the world do we give so much time to nothing or at least nothing truly important?
yes, this week my goal is to keep it simple and i think i can do that best by staying present. by staying in the here and now and by constantly asking “why not?”.
why not make snow angels on a sunday afternoon? why not take an afternoon nap? why not dedicate an hour of solitude to myself each day? why not meditate more? why not…
why not just keep it simple?
