for my “something to talk about” i have the following excerpt from a book that i keep by my bedside and try to read from daily. the book is called simple abundance and it’s phenomenal. the following is what caught my eye this week:

“is there a woman alive who doesn’t suffer from stress? if there is, seek her out, ask her to share her wisdom. when you find here, i’d be willing to bet she’ll offer the following suggestions…

  • cultivate gratitude
  • carve out an hour a day for solitude
  • begin and end each day with prayer, meditation and reflection
  • keep it simple
  • keep your house picked up
  • don’t overschedule
  • strive for realistic deadlines
  • never make a promise you cannot keep
  • allow an extra half hour for everything you do
  • create quiet surroundings at home and at work
  • go to bed at nine o’clock twice a week
  • always carry something interesting to read (this made me laugh because i always have something to read with me, a habit i’ve had since i was like 6, although back then i’d carry 2 books in case i finished one. i love reading!)
  • breathe – deeply & often
  • move – walk, dance, run, find a sport you enjoy
  • drink pure spring water – lots of it
  • eat only when hungry
  • if it’s not delicious, don’t eat it
  • be instead of do (love love love this one!)
  • set aside one day a week for rest and renewal (we try to make that sunday’s around here)
  • laugh more often
  • luxuriate in your senses
  • always opt for comfort
  • if you don’t love it, live without it
  • let mother nature nurture
  • don’t answer the telephone during dinner
  • stop trying to please everybody
  • start pleasing yourself
  • stay away from negative people
  • don’t squander precious resources: time, creative energy, emotion (also love this one!)
  • nurture friendships
  • don’t be afraid of your passion
  • approach problems as challenges
  • honor your aspirations
  • set achievable goals
  • surrender expectations (awesome one!)
  • savor beauty
  • create boundaries
  • for every “yes”, let there be a “no”
  • don’t worry; be happy
  • remember, happiness is a living emotion
  • exchange security for serenity (love the word serenity)
  • care for your soul
  • cherish your dreams
  • express love every day
  • search for your authentic self until you find her! “

how incredible is that list? i always get stuck in the thinking that the only way i can destress is to go to the spa & get a massage or facial. i dream of the day i can afford going to the kura door (my all time favorite spa in utah) more than once a year. i literally feel the stress just melt away the second i walk in their doors and in all honesty, it’s not even so much the actual facial, as it is the entire experience and atmosphere.

reading this list though was such a great reminder to me that coping with stress and controlling our stress is a daily choice & it does not require daily spa visits (although, wouldn’t that be nice!).

i mean, the majority of the things on the list don’t even require spending a cent. they simply require a change of attitude or a change in our time management. as i typed the list i had the idea i might like to choose one item on the list to work on each week until i make it through the list. i figure if i focus on each thing for a week, it will take almost an entire year to get through the list. yes, i think i just might do that. anyone want to join me? i think it’s about time i start creating the atmosphere i seek so out so desperately at the kura door in my own life…and i think this list will help.

well, friends now it’s time to see what you’ve deemed worthy to talk about…link up below!
