first off, today is my husband’s 26th birthday, so happy birthday honey!
second, for any one who has a baby or toddler, you know buying clothes for them can potentially get rather pricey. especially with your first child when you have absolutely nothing. every three months the first year, and then about every 6 months after that you are having to purchase a whole new wardrobe for them. they grow so so quickly.
i, myself, been asked a few times how we can afford to have a kid while my husband was school and now medical school (and I’m not really working) and how we have so many cute clothes for him. truthfully, i have to laugh to myself when i hear this because it’s all a matter of choice and perspective when you figure how much a kid & their stuff actually costs. kids are expensive as their parents decide they need to be! it’s that simple & you’ll see what i mean over the next few weeks.
it is with these questions and the widely accepted notion that kids clothes have to be expensive in mind, that i have decided to start doing a feature every friday where i show you exactly where and how i get my little man’s clothes. i’ll also be throwing in a few posts about where i get my clothes. i’m telling you, dressing on a budget can be done & the funny thing is, i’m not even the best at it! so believe me, if i can do it, you can do it!!! i’ll show you the cheapest of cheap ways to get clothes, as well as how to get some of those name brand clothes for a little cheaper as well – if you must only have name brands! (you know who you are!).
now onto my first tip of the feature:
one would think since our babies are about a fourth of our size, their clothes would be priced accordingly…but no. a shirt can still run $10-$15 and sweaters can run up to $44! especially if you find yourself in stores like janie & jack, gap kids & gymboree. like seriously? that’s way out of my price range…which is why i shop consignment stores.

to me, as long as clothing is in great/like new condition (and believe me i’m really picky about this) i don’t care if it was worn by ten kids before mine. i love the discount! especially since i love the look of clothes from stores like janie & jack but can’t afford right now to just walk in that store and pay full price, that’s literally not an option for me right now. would i love to just walk into gap kids and grab whatever i see and not worry about the cost, sure. is that very practical though, no. so i’ve found other ways to get the same look…for less! much much less! why pay full price, when you don’t have to? plus, then i can also get more. i mean, you should see my child’s wardrobe, he definitely has options!
back to the tip though…
here in colorado i’ve found a few consignment stores where i have gotten some killer deals on little man’s clothing. the store i’ve frequented the most is called kid’s again. other’s in the area include once upon a child & tumbleweeds.
the great thing about consignment stores is they generally only accept certain high end brands, and they are generally really picky about what they will or won’t accept to sale in their store. which means although it’s clothing that’s “used”, it’s clothing that is still in great condition and at a much cheaper price.
the following are items i purchased from kid’s again on my first visit. they were having a labor day sale on fall clothing & clearing out all their summer items so i was able to grab a few $2.00 t-shirts for ti’s wardrobe next summer and some fall sweaters at consignment prices plus 20% off. i’ve listed what i paid below each picture.
