friday after work broc and i planned on visiting a bakery downtown called johnny kolache’s upon arriving though our plan was foiled. why? well, johnny apparently closes shop once his baked goods are all sold out for the day. who knew places like that still existed? it was a small brick building off of about 200 west and 900 east and it was all closed up for the afternoon, much to broc’s disappointment.
i personally found the thought of johnny in there cooking his kolache’s all morning and then staying only until they are sold out rather quaint. a mom and pop shop that is apparently in high demand. we will be attempting a visit another time before we move, but this time in the morning hours! we have learned our lesson.
the trip was not a total failure though because we were able to go to this gem instead, which was only a few blocks away! city cakes & cafe is it’s name. i first read about this cafe over at a foodie stays fit a few days ago and made a mental note that i wanted to give it a try. so, i was a little thrilled johnny’s didn’t pan out and we found ourselves in the neighborhood.
the cafe opened january of this year, and the owner is the mom of a girl i went to high school with. the food is pretty much all made from scratch, primarily vegan, and ridiculously yummy! i’m not going to lie, i went in expecting to probably not like what we ordered or for it to not be as delicious as something non vegan might be, but oh oh oh was i proven wrong! am so happy when i venture out of my comfort zone and try something new, only for it to become a new fave! i need to venture out of my comfort zone more often.
we didn’t have long and so we ordered some treats to go. i ordered a chocolate chip peanut butter bar & a banana muffin, and the husband ordered a cinnamon roll. all of our items were vegan and they were so very delicious. i was going to take pictures when we got home, but couldn’t, because the food was gone within minutes of leaving the store.
i’m already craving more of what i ordered. (as for the cinnamon roll, i am personally not a fan of cinnamon rolls, but broc said it was “good” so you’ll have to take his word for it). i have nothing but rave reviews for the peanut butter bar and the muffin. i love the fact that the food is made from scratch and pretty much as healthy as you can get, for a dessert! am excited to return and try their lunch menu. if they can make a vegan dessert taste that positively scrumptious i can’t wait to see what they can do with a sandwich.
if you are ever in salt lake, stop in and show them some love. the cafe is warm and cozy and looks like the perfect place to get lost in a good book or on your laptop while enjoying the free wi fi & a yummy snack! who doesn’t love free wi fi. oh, and the prices were much more consumer friendly than i was expecting as well. we walked out of there for around $8. not too bad at all!
in the end, our outing was a success. we didn’t get kolache’s but we did get some tasty vegan delights instead. do i plan on turning vegan any time soon? no. i do plan on visiting this cafe a few more times though before we move, and when we come back to visit for that matter. i really can’t get over the peanut butter bar! plus, i love supporting family owned business’s. i love the atmosphere, the friendly customer services, and supporting someone following their passion. it’s a win win all around.
ps. if you are like i was, and have no clue what a kolache is. go here! basically it’s a pastry, but that link will give you an exact description.
