it’s a new year. that means new goals, and for me…a new money plan.
now, let’s be clear here…we all know money has never been my strong point. i definitely prefer to spend money than save it. that doesn’t mean i don’t prefer to save money when purchasing things, i definitely do (i even work for a money saving site)! i just like to go spend that saved money almost immediately after saving it on a pedicure or massage…preferably at the kura door in salt lake! in my book the past while it hasn’t been a penny saved is a penny earned…it’s been a penny saved is a penny put towards new shoes!
well, this year, i (and broc) decided that needs to change. broc’s school situation will be changing in about 5-6 months (he’ll be advancing on to the clinical rotation part of med school) which means we will be moving (who knows where, but there will be a move)! and, when we move, i’d prefer our finances be such that we have more options available to us than a 1 bedroom apartment in some crazy scary neighborhood!
i’ve actually been told by broc that there is a very strong possibility of us actually being able to purchase a home! um…did the heavens just open and the angels start singing??? a home? of our own? YES PLEASE! we have not been in a place of our very own since the first 6 months of our marriage and that was almost 5 years ago (and that was a little basement apartment that i adored)!!! of course there are no guarantee’s, but just hearing that a home is even remotely a possibility, has given me all the motivation i need to whip our finances into shape.
in fact, i may even admit i’m warming up to the word budget! shocking i know!
with that said, our “budget” for 2012 for our food & household supplies is $200.00 a month. which, in all honestly, is actually a very lenient budget. there are families of 4-6 that have budgets of only $100-$150 a month… so i’m feeling very comfortable that $200 is a decent goal (especially for someone like me who is still learning to simplify. yes… my simplify goal has even crossed over to my spending! no…the world is not ending).
to help me keep this goal and to help me keep track, every few days (or at least once a week) i’ll be posting a summary of what i’ve spent so far. i think putting it up here on le blog will help me have some accountability and help remind me of our end goal which is our own little happy place in 6-8 months.
here’s to the word budget & i becoming actual friends this year!
