it’s a new year! a new decade for that matter. wow! i told my mom over the holiday break that i remember doing a skit in the 5th grade where we traveled in time to 2013 (or something like that) and we thought we had picked such a far far time to travel to. little did we know, it really wasn’t that far away. funny how time changes depending on what’s going on in your life, and your perspective.

a new year of course means new resolutions. i’ve actually been thinking for a few weeks now about what i wanted to focus on this year, and this decade. at the beginning i had the usual thoughts of save more money, get in better shape, eat better foods, etc. etc. but i wasn’t getting very excited about those. i was thinking, blah! same old, same old. yuck!

as i thought about it more though and tried to take it to the next level i found i always came back to the same thoughts/experiences, things i could get a little more excited about…

1. i want to simplify. i know this one is said a lot and probably on many people’s lists, but for me, it’s something i really need to, and want to do. i want to simplify the food i eat, simplify my relationships, simplify how long it takes to get ready in the morning, etc. i am finding more and more that simplicity brings calm and peace. i want more of both those things in my life.

2. i want to re-examine every time i say “should”. in fact, i want to try to eliminate “should” from my vocabulary entirely. i find 9 times out of 10 when i am stressed out or upset over something, it’s because i feel something or someone “should be” a certain way. this year i want to question that statement and simply let people and things be. i want to accept the people around me for who they are instead of how i think they “should be”.  i also want to apply this to myself. i’m sure i’m not the only one that places expectations upon myself because i think things “should” be a certain way.

3. i want to continue to search for the positive in life and to seek after things that virtuous, lovely or praiseworthy. i want to live my life believing the statement that “everyday hides the possibility for a miracle”. i want to actively choose to be happy.

4. a lesson i learned in a floral arranging class i took while i was up at BYU-Idaho (only the best place to go to college ever!). i remember sitting in the class the first week and the instructor reading a scripture to us about how everything will grow to it’s full potential (i can’t remember the exact scripture now, but when i do i will post it), he then talked about how flowers, left on their own will grow to their full potential and then die. there is a cycle they follow, and that cycle can also be applied to our lives. there are times for nurturing and growing, there are times for blooming, there are times for hibernation and there are times to die. each and every flower is programmed to live to it’s full potential, and so are we.

5. another lesson learned at BYU-I. i was sitting in a biology class being taught by a former brain surgeon/researcher, turned college instructor and he gave a lesson on how powerful our brains really are. i will never forget sitting in that lesson as he gave example after example of different things and the profound effects they have on our brain. the main point of the lesson being, whether you realize it or not, the sounds & images you put into your brain really do affect your brain and affect it powerfully. so be very careful what you feed your brain!

yes, those are the main thoughts that seemed to keep coming back to me. of course, then i thought, how can i combine all those thoughts into concise resolutions? it was while i pondered this that the  following list (that i actually posted not to long ago, but is so incredible i’m deeming it blogable again) came again to mind.

my resolution is spend a week or so on each of the following tasks. i say a week or so, because some of them may only take a day or two and others may require a little more attention. i figure though by the end of the year if i focus on each of these tasks i will have covered all of the above five thoughts.

  • cultivate gratitude
  • carve out an hour a day for solitude
  • begin and end each day with prayer, meditation and reflection
  • keep it simple
  • keep your house picked up
  • don’t overschedule
  • strive for realistic deadlines
  • never make a promise you cannot keep
  • allow an extra half hour for everything you do
  • create quiet surroundings at home and at work
  • go to bed at nine o’clock twice a week
  • always carry something interesting to read (this made me laugh because i always have something to read with me, a habit i’ve had since i was like 6, although back then i’d carry 2 books in case i finished one. i love reading!)
  • breathe – deeply & often
  • move – walk, dance, run, find a sport you enjoy
  • drink pure spring water – lots of it
  • eat only when hungry
  • if it’s not delicious, don’t eat it
  • be instead of do (love love love this one!)
  • set aside one day a week for rest and renewal (we try to make that sunday’s around here)
  • laugh more often
  • luxuriate in your senses
  • always opt for comfort
  • if you don’t love it, live without it
  • let mother nature nurture
  • don’t answer the telephone during dinner
  • stop trying to please everybody
  • start pleasing yourself
  • stay away from negative people
  • don’t squander precious resources: time, creative energy, emotion (also love this one!)
  • nurture friendships
  • don’t be afraid of your passion
  • approach problems as challenges
  • honor your aspirations
  • set achievable goals
  • surrender expectations (awesome one!)
  • savor beauty
  • create boundaries
  • for every “yes”, let there be a “no”
  • don’t worry; be happy
  • remember, happiness is a living emotion
  • exchange security for serenity (love the word serenity)
  • care for your soul
  • cherish your dreams
  • express love every day
  • search for your authentic self until you find her! “
i’ll be starting my list next week and would love for others to join me. if you would like to join in and make this the year you get more in tune with your authentic self, the please leave a comment below and let me know.

i must admit, every time i look over this list i get more and more excited about this year!!! 🙂
