how would it be? if it were a perfect world this is how i would envision ti and i looking at the aiport! |
what a day! my day started at 4:00 am this morning so that i could make it to the airport for a 7:00 am flight to utah. when we booked the flight i thought, 7:00 am isn’t too early, sounds great! i forgot though about the whole having to be at the airport an hour or so before your flight and about how the airport is now a little farther away than it was for us here in utah. rather than a 20 minute drive we now have a 45 minute drive, plus the denver airport takes a lot longer to get from point a to b once your actually in the airport – so 4:00 am it was!
it was just the little man and i traveling today as broc has to stay home for school. he was going to try and come join us for a day or two of the trip next week, but now won’t even be able to do that. study study study is his new mantra – as it should be for any med school student. i am sure that this is just the first of many things he’ll be missing over the next 7 years. i’m sure it will all be worth it in the end though.
i must admit i was a little worried about traveling with the little man all by myself. concerned about how to carry all the luggage in to check in, what if he freaks out on the plane (he has yet to do this, so i keep waiting…knowing it’s bound to happen eventually!), how will i get my luggage out to the car, etc. plus there are also the looks you get from people? you know the looks. i just didn’t want to deal with those.
boy oh boy! i had absolutely nothing to be worried about. people at the denver & salt lake airports this morning – THANK YOU! THANK YOU! i was truly amazed at all the help people offered. from the moment i was at skycap, two ladies jumped in and helped with the luggage – telling me they had been there and done that and it was the least they could do, they understood all to well.
then the man at the skycap desk went above and beyond to help and lift and keep the little man entertained.
then a guy at the mcdonald’s line let me jump ahead simply because he saw a toddler & even braved a mob of hungry people to get me a straw.
of course then there was the guy behind me walking down to the plane that patiently waited while i rescued my diet coke from my purse (i have pockets a medium coke will fit in, but for some reason the lid was being stupid), rather than being annoyed at this crazy mom trying to rescue her diet coke, he simply offered help and smiled.
then there was the patient and congenial business man who asked if he could sit on our row, explaining he doesn’t mind kids and let him know if i need any help as i warned him there was a toddler on the row. he even had the tray on the middle seat pulled down and ready for my apple juice when the flight attendant came by. a big help since the little man was passed out in my arms (he slept the whole flight!) and i couldn’t have grabbed the drink had i tried nor put down the tray to my own seat as ti was on my lap. this super nice businessman was one step ahead of me most of the flight making things easier & explaining he had two kids of his own & all with a smile on his face.
then there was the kind couple who stopped to put up my stroller for me in the hallway without even being asked. they simply said it was no problem and they hoped someone would help them in the same situation.
and last there was the incredible woman who saw me with all my luggage at baggage claim and who helped walk everything out to where my dad was waiting to pick us up, again with a smile and without being asked.
INCREDIBLE!
you hear so many stories of grumpy people getting mad at parents with kids and shooting those “looks” or stories about how awful it is to travel with toddlers because other people get annoyed and are mean or don’t help, etc. my experience today was the exact opposite. people went out of their way to help and to do anything they could to make it a little easier for me, so again THANK YOU people of denver and salt lake.
there are still good, kind & caring people. people who serve and lend a hand. people who go above and beyond to help a stranger. people who are patient and understanding. today they were everywhere and i am so grateful. my quick prayer this morning that i would make it through the flight was answered, and answered above and beyond what i expected. so grateful!
ps: on another totally unrelated note. i just purchased a pair of sandals for the little man for next summer for only $1 – can you believe it? jcpenny has a “$10 off a purchase of $10 or more” coupon good only for today, as well as free shipping on all shoes. so i ventured to the toddler shoes and saw a pair that will be perfect for next summer. found a $28 pair of shoes that i only had to pay $1.03 for as they were on sale for $10.99 – so minus the ten and add tax and that’s an awesome deal on shoes. i mean, who pays $28 for a pair of toddler shoes? certainly not me! i’d much rather pay my $1.00 – it’s been a good day!!!
