Looking for a fun playdate idea? Take your kids to Scheels! I took Titan and his cousin to Scheels for a playdate/field trip today and they had a BLAST! I realize it’s actually a store, but they had so many fun things to look at and do that we spent over an hour there and didn’t do any shopping! It proved to be rather educational & perfect for two 4 year old little boys! 🙂
We started off our excursion by going on the ferris wheel and then made our way through the rest of the store.
A couple things to note, the ferris wheel is only $1.00 per person! (Talk about a good deal!) And, you do have to purchase your tokens at the front registers. So, if/when you go,  make sure to purchase your tokens right as you walk in, otherwise you will be back tracking up to the front to purchase them.
Also, your kids do have to be at least 36 inches tall to ride & there is enough room on each seat for one adult and two small children. I may or may not have called and asked that before I went. 🙂 (Please tell me I’m not the only one who thinks of all these teeny tiny details before I go anywhere? I just knew I didn’t want to get there and find out that we all couldn’t go together and so one would have to wait while the other rode, etc. Plus, at the time I didn’t think Broc would be with us. Can you tell I try think ahead and plan for every scenario possible? I’m kind of crazy like that, I know. Although with kids it’s all about working smarter, not harder…right?!) 🙂

After the ferris wheel we made our way up to the second floor to check out the “Animal Mountain”. I’m not sure if that’s even what it’s called, but that’s what the boys were calling it. Ti and his cousin had A LOT of fun looking at all the animals, asking names for the ones they didn’t know, etc. I think they would have spent another 30-60 minutes looking at all the animals had we let them.

These two kept pointing things out to each other and talking a mile a minute. It was so cute to watch!
I loved that we went for the ferris wheel and ended up having a mini lesson on habitats and animals as well. Learning on the go is always a plus! In this picture Broc was telling them all about the tarantula on the wall!

After the Animal Mountain it was over to the huge airplane hanging in the store that the boys spotted from the ferris wheel. They were a little disappointed they couldn’t go in the airplane, but were finally satisfied just taking a look at it.

Last but not least, on the way out we stopped at the Thomas Jefferson Exhibit. Thomas Jefferson is  an animatronic that moved and spoke telling the boys all about the Declaration of Independence. I’m not sure how much the boys will actually remember, but at least they’ve heard it once and can continue to build upon that as they get older. So we even got a mini history lesson in as well! Added bonus!

I found this plaque interesting and had fun reading all the facts and information. Good history review for myself!

(Side note: I saw this sign on the way out and snapped a quick picture to remind myself to watch out for future activities like this when we are in town. This event looks like a lot of fun for kids! And, it would be a great addition to a lesson about Pilgrims or Thanksgiving! Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it’s a FREE event! Have any of you ever been to one of their events? I’d love to know what you thought!

After Scheels we took the boys across the parking lot to McDonald’s for some mini ice cream cones, some time in the play place & of course a DC for me! I figured the more energy we can get these boys to burn off, the better! 😉
(Upon walking in, the cashier said that he had made an extra strawberry shake on accident and would we want it. A free shake? Sounds good to me!) 🙂

The boys played for quite a while and then settled in for a round of checkers in the “computer” area. I want to know when McDonald’s started adding in little tech stations to their play places? I have never seen stations like these in any other McDonald’s. Of course, I haven’t seen many McDonald’s like this one, period. There were definitely some nice additions to this new location (I think it’s less than a year old) and those additions included a better play place, these tech stations and a glass wall so you can see into the play play from the main dining area. For years I’ve wondered why they don’t put a wall in like that. Looks like they finally got a clue! 😉
Overall, today was a great day filled with lots of fun and even some learning! And, it all cost less than $5.00! That’s my kind of day!
What types of free (or really cheap) and fun activities do you like to take your kids too? I’m always on the lookout for new things to try out with Titan. We like our “relaxing” days but we also like to get out and go as well. 🙂

Pre-K Writing Practice with Crayola Dry-Erase Learning Flash Cards – Numbers & Counting

Happy Monday everyone! Hope you all had a great weekend. I wanted to pop on real quick today and share a new favorite teaching tool we have in our house.
The other day I was shopping at Target and I spotted the Crayola Dry-Erase Learning Flash Cards – Numbers & Counting on clearance for only $2.78. (Reg. $3.99) Now, I’ll be the first to admit, that’s not a super awesome clearance price, but I have been focusing more on Ti’s writing lately and thought something new like this would help excited him about practicing his numbers and letters again. Plus, after researching and looking for similar products online, I realized $2.78 isn’t bad at all.
So glad I grabbed this pack of cards when I saw them because I was right about them helping keep Ti interested! Titan LOVES using these new cards to practice writing his numbers.
And, I’ve come to find out, they are totally worth the $2.78. In fact, now that we have tried them out, I would grab them even at full price! (I was unable to find these exact cards for sale online (I think they are an older version) you can purchase a similar set though that is monster themed on Amazon for $9.07)

I really like these cards because they are fun and colorful, they go up to 25, they are easily taken on trips or thrown in your purse for on the go learning, they provide lots of opportunities to practice writing the numbers in different ways and they still look brand new after being wiped off! (Something that doesn’t happen all the time with dry erase products.)
Plus, the fact that they are dry erase, allows the little man to really easily start over if he thinks his writing isn’t good enough or if he’s messed up. (Yes, we have a little perfectionist on our hands!) 🙂

I also like that they have some cards with mini math questions like this.

…and this…

…and all of these!
These cards helped me see that Titan is much better at figuring out the equations than he is at writing the actual numbers. This is because 1) He doesn’t quite see the importance yet of being able to write in the very technology based world that he see around him and 2) He gets VERY frustrated when his little hands and body don’t do exactly what he wants them to do. We are working on teaching him that A LOT of things, like handwriting, take practice and time, but that’s one elephant we are going to have to take on a bite at a time. Baby steps…baby steps… 🙂
In the mean time, we are using fun tools, like these cards, to help keep him interested and to keep the learning fun. Which is really what is should be all about at this stage any way! Learning through fun!
What fun tools or methods have you used to help your kids practice their handwriting? If you have any other great products or idea, I’d love to hear about them!

This last Saturday I took Titan to a Build & Grow Event at Lowe’s. At the event, Ti was able to build his very own Spooky Stacker!
He got to practice following directions and using a hammer. (And I got to practice moving my fingers really fast!)

Then, he got to practice his fine motor skills by placing all the stickers on.

I loved how focused he was. He was so worried about getting everything “just right”.

Last but not least, he got to show it to a Lowe’s employee for a quick “inspection”.

I guess it passed! 😉
We had never been to a Lowe’s Build and Grow Event before, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Overall, I’d say it was a great experience and we will definitely be going back. In fact, Ti was asking as we were walking out when the next one was. (Side note: If you are wondering how long the events are, we were in and out in about 30 minutes.)
Ti loved building something & getting his very own badge and certificate and I loved that he was learning while having fun. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the event was also free! (They even gave him a pair of googles & a badge to add to his very own Lowe’s apron! Not bad at all for a free event!)

If you would like to attend a Lowe’s Build and Grow Event, the next event is being held November 9th at a most Lowe’s locations. You can sign up online at the Lowe’s site. You will want to note that spots fill up fast!
