I get asked by a lot of family and friends if “couponing” is really worth it, if you can save money on your groceries and still eat healthy, if you can save money without buying tons of newspapers, etc. My answer is definitely…YES! To help explain why I feel this way, I decided to document a normal grocery run for my family…

Here is an example of a super quick grocery store run I made two days ago (3/10/14) to Target. Please note, I did NOT use any newspaper coupons. (We cancelled our subscription a few weeks ago to prepare for our move.)

This entire trip used only coupons I printed off from online, mobile coupons I had sent to my phone from Target, and Target Cartwheel Offers (more Target discounts that are available through a FREE Target app on your phone or online.)

I purchased a container of lunch meat, a bag of carrots, two cucumbers, two lemons, four bananas, three greek yogurts, a shampoo, a conditioner, and two Mossimo Women’s Long & Lean Tank Tops for only $9.09* and that includes my tax!! Had I paid full price for everything my total would have been $34.42. So I saved $25.33. That’s almost a 75% savings on my groceries! And, as you can see, that’s quite a bit of pretty healthy food that came home with me + two new workout tank tops for my ever growing baby bump! (Love the Mossimo Long & Tanks for the gym, especially when I am pregnant!)

To put the savings even further into perspective, one a normal day at Target ONE tank top alone costs $9.00 + tax. So I walked out with an additional tank top plus all of the fruits and vegetables, the lunch meat, the greek yogurts and the shampoo and conditioner for about same price! And, it only took my an extra 10-15 minutes to plan my trip and maybe an extra 5 minutes in the store. I’d say that 15-20 minutes was definitely worth the extra $25.33 I now have in my bank account.

(Side note: I LOVE the Simply Balanced Greek Yogurts at Target. They have a great texture, have really yummy fruit in them and are very reasonably priced, even when you can’t find an awesome deal on them. They have definitely been a “go to” of mine during this pregnancy.)

And, no. I didn’t not come up with all of these deals on my own. I follow sites like Freebies2Deals, Springs Bargains and Money Saving Mom. All sites that do the work for you. πŸ™‚ I’m telling you, it’s all about working smarter, not harder! It’s one those sites that I learn about things like the new text coupons from Target or the free Suave deal with a new printable coupon that was just released.

Here is how I plan my shopping trips. I look through my pantry and decide what else I need for meals that week. Then, I visit the Freebies2Deals site and click on the Target logo on the sidebar. Once I do that, all of the current deals for Target pop up. Including all of the coupons I will need for each deal. So, then all I have to do is write down which deals I want to grab, make sure I have the appropriate coupons printed off and in hand (or on my phone) and then run to Target. Easy as that! (Of course, repeat for each store you plan on going too!)

Occasionally I will notice a mobile coupon or a coupon online for something I need that week, so I’ll add that to my list as well. For example, when I saw the coupon for $1.00 off of three Simply Balanced Greek Yogurts, and those were already on my shopping list, I made sure to make a note to use that coupon as well. Even though it wasn’t a deal listed on the site.

The best part? All of these deals are still working at Target through Saturday, March 15th! So if you want to brush up on your money saving skills and give the whole “couponing” thing a try. You can! All you will need is a printer and your cell phone! πŸ™‚ Of course, don’t forget to switch your printer to grey scale when printing your coupon(s). No need to print them in color and waste your ink!

PS: If you don’t want to bother with text coupons, I received a mailer yesterday (3/11/14) from Target that contained a lot of the same coupons I got via text. So, if you got that same mailer, you could use those in addition to the text coupons or in place of. YAY! I love being able to save more on my produce! πŸ™‚

*Note: The Target Suave Natural Infusions Coupon I mention in one of the deal scenarios above did for some reason have an issue at checkout. I took the coupon to Customer Service though right after my purchase and they immediately accepted the coupons and refunded me my $3.00 for the two coupons I had. Just an FYI in case you have that happen as well. That’s also why my receipt states $12.09 as my total and not $9.09! πŸ™‚

i’ve mentioned before that i was asked a month or so ago to teach a “coupon & budgeting” class at an enrichment night. well, that night was last night and i’ve decided to turn the class i taught into a blog series. i’ll be posting about everything i taught in the class as well as give other additional tips i didn’t have time for last night.

i get asked a lot lately, “how do you do it? how does it all work?” and this series will answer those questions. by the time i’m done, you’ll be able to have your own show on TLC’s extreme couponing series! πŸ™‚ yes, that’s right you too will be able to buy 400 mustards and 1000 toothpaste for free…if that’s what you choose to do with that you learn. or you can simply take the knowledge and use it to cut down your families budget and help build your family a food storage you’ll actually eat and use. the choice is up to you! i personally choose the 2nd option, but that’s just me. lol πŸ™‚

to begin, i want to go over the most common reason that people don’t coupon, or think it isn’t for them (see, if you see yourself in any of these excuses!):

  • time
  • kids
  • don’t know how
  • preconceived ideas about it
  • tried it once and it failed
  • can’t find coupons for healthy food
  • pride/Image

now i’m going to tell you why all those excuses, are just excuses! get ready for a little tough love! πŸ™‚

first up, time. we all think we don’t have enough time! this is a total lie that we tell ourselves to give us an easy out, because let me tell you something, we all have ALL the time there is! there isn’t any more time to be had. it’s not that you don’t have the time. you have the same number of hours in the day as i do. it’s that you are choosing to do other things with your time! make sense? so look closely at what you are spending your time on, and i guarantee you can find the time, if you really WANT to. this actually applies to anything in life. it’s never that you don’t have the time, it’s that you are choosing to do other things with your time!

next up, kids. you don’t want to haul your kids to the store, or you don’t have time to plan your trips because your kids always need you. guess what? i have a kid & so do many other couponers. stop using your kids as an excuse & instead start of thinking of how they can help. can they do more of the chores around the house to give you time to coupon? can they help pull out expired coupons? depending on your kid’s ages, there is a lot they can help out with.

now, there are families with younger kids. my family being one of them & i will admit it’s not always easy shopping with a toddler or multiple little ones. my suggestion? go when they are in bed at night and your husband is home or trade with another mom.

you can also learn to work with your toddler instead of against them. it’s all about planning ahead! when i know titan is coming with me and it’s a couponing trip i make sure my ipod touch is charged, i pack extra snacks and i try to make a game out of it. we like to play hide and seek with the coupons. i show him the pictures on the coupons and then he tries to find the item. i also have found that putting items into the basket is a great time to teach counting. just make sure to plan extra time for the trip & make sure you aren’t cutting into nap time. all it takes is a little planning & some creativity and it’s totall doable!

next on the list, you don’t know how. i have one word for you “google”! there is NO reason in this day and age, to say you don’t know how to do something and think that’s a good excuse! if you want to learn, everything you need to learn is at your fingertips! literally! how do you think i learned? i hopped online! one of the sites i found to be the most helpful was freebies2deals!

all right, onto preconceived ideas and the excuse of, ” i tried it once, and it didn’t work”. i think these fall into the same category. if you tried it once and it didn’t work, it’s because you weren’t doing it right! ever think about that? in fact, guess what? i tried to use this excuse too! then i decided to open up my mind to the possibility that maybe the problem was my lack of knowledge and not couponing! as soon as i put in the time learning how to correctly coupon, it worked! imagine that! πŸ™‚

learning to coupon is just like learning any other new skill. there is a method to it that must be learned and there are rules and guidelines. it’s just like sewing, gardening, cutting hair or any other skill. there is definitely a learning curve, but once you have the tools and knowledge, you have those tools and knowledge for life! educate yourself as much as you can!

k, this next one is my favorite. i love when i hear people say that they don’t coupon because you can’t eat healthy with coupons. um. wrong. let me show you the greek yogurt, wheat pasta, glutton free all natural chips, organic juice & all natural toddler snacks that grace my cupboard shelves (and that’s not even all of it!). it is 100% possible to eat healthy and use coupons to help lower your budget!

last up, pride and image! i saved this reason for last because it was probably my biggest excuse the last few years. i was mortified at the thought of using coupons because, “oh no, what will people think of me!” i mean it’s SO embarrassing right to admit that you use coupons? or to pull out a huge ol’ stack of them at checkout? like, only weird people do that or super super poor people, right? there was NO WAY i was going to be caught dead out shopping with coupons. how absolutely embarrassing!

then one day it dawned on me. i can use coupons and keep my families budget in check and have that money to spend on other things & be in control of what i’m spending at the grocery store, or i can continue to worry about what other people will think about me – which doesn’t benefit me at all!

you can clearly see that i decided to chuck my pride out the door and now proudly hand over my stack of coupons at checkout. some people may think i’ve gone off the deep end, but one day i’ll be lounging by my own pool with a deep end (with a diet coke in hand of course!) because of all the money i’m saving, so i don’t really care!

i’ve only been seriously “couponing” about 6 months and i can’t even begin to tell you all the ways our little family has benefited from it, there is definite freedom that comes from knowing that you control where every last cent of your money is going when it comes to groceries and household items. i honestly wish i had gotten over my image/pride issue a long time ago when it came to coupons.

there is NO shame in using coupons. there is no embarrasment in using coupons. coupons are currency & if anyone ever tries to make you feel otherwise, they are just jealous they don’t have the guts to pull out their own coupons!!! i mean who doesn’t want to save 85% on their grocery bill each month???

all right, that’s it for today. if you have made it this far i challenge you to see what excuses you’ve been making and to see them as exactly what they are, excuses. start thinking in possibilities instead of problems!

“to get what we’ve never had before, we must do what we’ve never done before!”
