i spent last friday through tuesday participating in the landmark forum.
i spent those days participating in something that has transformed and altered the course of my life forever. i know that sounds over the top or dramatic – but it’s the truth for me. there is no other way to describe it.
so what is the landmark forum? that’s a good question. it’s a forum that literally transforms it’s participants:
in the landmark forum, the notion of possibility moves from an abstract ideal to a day-to-day living reality. life becomes framed in a new way. the way we approach the world, and the way the world approaches us, changes. the landmark forum leaves you with the ability to relate to life with a new freedom and power. the abilities you learn never leave you, and are yours forever. the landmark forum is not a one-time event. it is a moment-by-moment approach to being alive. ~ course syllabus
in the landmark forum they make the distinction between informational learning (think of all your high school and college classes) and transformational learning. in informational learning you are busy taking notes, memorizing facts, studying your heart out to ace some test at a later date – you are gathering information.
in transformational learning you become aware to what you don’t know, you don’t know. you get real with yourself. you literally learn through transformation. there is no note taking or memorization – it isn’t needed. you make distinctions and have breakthroughs and when those occur you are transformed.
for example remember back to learning how to ride a bike. you could read all the books you wanted on riding a bike, you could take all the notes you wanted on how to ride a bike, you could watch all your friends ride their bikes and study them, but until you actually got on the bike yourself and until that first time you actually distinguish what balance is on a bike and how to achieve it, it’s not a real for you. you haven’t learned it. the moment you do distinguish balance though and how to ride a bike, you are forever altered. you will never forget how to ride a bike and that distinction of balance. you may get rusty on a bike. you may not ever be lance armstrong on a bike but you will always know and own the distinction of balance. that is transformational learning. you didn’t need any notes, you simply needed action.
i have been an avid reader of self help books for years! i have bookshelves full of them. books on how to improve your marriage, how to lose weight, how to eat healthier, how to set better goals, how to dream up better goals so you actually accomplish your better goals, how to…how to…how to….the problem with reading how-to books though is you aren’t in the game when you read those. you are sitting on the sideline’s of life gathering information for when you actually decided to live your life – most of us never actually get to the living part though. i am such a person. i have pages of notebooks filled with information i’ve frantically scrambled after – yet i still have the same complaints about my life that i had 10 years ago. i keep trying to make changes but keep getting the same results, keep ending up with the same life.
until the landmark forum. until this last weekend.
to be honest, if i tried to describe the landmark forum to you any more than i have, it would be like telling you how to ride a bike but without you actually getting on the bike or ever touching a bike – it wouldn’t work. the landmark forum must be experienced. it must be participated in. in future posts i will share my experience in the forum and how it has transformed me. i just wanted to share first a little (ha ha) about the forum, so consider this part 1.
*** as a side note: at first when i was told about landmark, i thought landmark was something like scientology or a “new” religion. it is nothing of the sort. it is not religion based at all. it is a course on humanity and since we are all human, no matter our religion, it has something for everyone. it is simply a new way of viewing the world and of understanding humanity as a whole. also the information given is my personal opinion and view point. i am not a representative or employee of landmark education in any way. thanks.***
