i have heard many a complaint lately from various people about how hard it is to find a job in the current economy – with or without a degree. it’s these complaints that has prompted me to write a “work outside the home” series of posts that will begin appearing for your reading pleasure over the next week or so.
now, you might be asking how do i have anything of value to say about getting job? or how can i help you in this process? or why should you even consider anything i say?
well let me begin by saying, i’m 25 and i’ve worked for 14 different companies. i have never been fired from a job – ever. i have left them all on my own accord when better opportunities presented themselves or when i moved for school. at one time or another i have even balanced multiple jobs – which now allows me to pick and choose which jobs i want to highlight depending on which field i’m wanting to work in on my resume. how sweet is that?
i’ve gotten every job i’ve ever interiewed for (well, other than two, but i will go into detail about that later). i have even had jobs just land in my lap. literally. i’ve had people approach me and offer me a job without ever filling out an application. i’ve also had boss’s call me and ask me if i would consider returning to their company after i had left. more recently i was told by a former boss that i was the best employee he has had in over 20 years of various employees. he’s had every age, every education status, etc. and i blew them all out of the water. (not going to lie, that felt very good to hear!)
lastly, for over a year at my last “corporate job” before i switched to nannying again, i was on the hiring end. i was responsible for reading through hundreds of resumes, filtering applicants, and deciding who would actally get an interview with our company. it didn’t take long to come to some of the conclusions i will tell you all about. basically, i have been on both ends and i have worked in a wide variety of jobs.
i tell you all this only to say – i sort of know what i’m talking about. i’ve talked the talk and walked the walk since i was in middle school. i only wish i were kidding. i have been on a payroll at some company or another since i was 13.
so you find yourself needing a job. what should you do? how do you stand out form the gazillion of other applicants? how do you land your dream job? where do you begin? it’ll all be here for you, but first let me say, i am brutal and you may not like what you hear. just remember though i’ve been in your shoes literally. i’m not giving you an advice i don’t take to heart myself.
also, you may find a job just fine without ever doing anything i suggest. if that’s the case. enjoy your new job and imagine me giving you a huge “high five” right now! if though, you find yourself without a job for longer than about two weeks after your last job has ended – you may want to tweak your routine just a little bit (or a lot). i’m a firm believer it should not take any longer than 2-4 weeks after your last day at your last job, to find new employment with decent pay, and that you relatively enjoy.
