a few weeks ago i was able to score a pretty killer deal on tickets through groupon (which if you’re not a member of groupon, you want to be!) to see cirque du soleil’s alegria. i figured the husband and i would enjoy a date night out before he leaves so i hit purchase and waited anxiously for last wednesday night to arrive.

wednesday evening we met up at gateway, after work and dropping ti guy off with my sister (thanks ada!), for some shoe shopping and a quick bite. broc was in need of hard core running shoes for the mile and miles of pavement pounding he’ll be doing at officer training. so into dick’s sporting goods we went. after shopping for shoes we headed over to the food court to enjoy one of my favorite fast food meals ever. hot dog on a stick + a strawberry julius. you can’t get an more summer foodesque than that! i heart both those tasty treats. after dinner, i made broc take a quick peek with me into anthropologie. i swoon over their displays and delightful home decor. am also a fan of a lot of their clothes & jewelry. oh, the jewelry! must steer clear of the jewelry display. it was a very quick peek and i walked away empty handed, but it is always so fun to browse. it took me back to highschool when i set up field trips for the advanced interior design class to go there and check out their ultra creative displays, made out of the most unique and interesting things. hands down my favorite high school class ever! although, that shouldn’t be a huge surprise to anyone. i believe i managed to take that class all three years – or at least be in the room while it was being taught. yes, it wasn’t hard to locate me in highschool. i literally lived in the interior design room.

back to wednesday night though, after anthro and a good laugh at my parallel park job, it was off to the e center to enjoy the show and enjoy is seriously an understatement. i wasn’t quite sure what to expect but it truly was magical. the website describes the show with the following:

“alegría is a mood, a state of mind. the themes of the show, whose name means “jubilation” in spanish, are many. power and the handing down of power over time, the evolution from ancient monarchies to modern democracies, old age, youth—it is against this backdrop that the characters of alegría play out their lives. kings’ fools, minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children make up its universe, along with the clowns, who alone are able to resist the passing of time and the social transformations that accompany it.”

“a baroque ode to the energy, grace, and power of youth.”

these descriptions hit the mark. there was a mood, a youthful mood that you couldn’t help but be overcome by. i felt as though i had entered a child’s dream complete with silly (not scary, thank heavens!) clowns, mystical snow, fantasy trains, flipping monkeys, twisting nymphs, and so much more. from start to finish we laughed at the antics of the various performers and oo’d and ah’d over the unreal stunts and tricks. the performers truly were masters their art. they made it look so simple. so easy. ha ha! the jokes on us. i can’t even fathom attempting the majority of what we witnessed. it was truly breathtaking at times.

there were a lot of children in the audience and i was so thrilled to see this. i can’t wait to take my little man to shows, such as this, when he is older. i think most kids, four and older, would love it through and through. i personally believe kids can never be exposed to too much art or culture. forget video games, bring on a cirque du soleil performance or a night with the symphony. culture, culture, culture! you can never see, learn about, or be exposed to too much phenomenal talent and beauty.

i highly recommend taking in a show, if it’s not too late already! saturday may have been the last night, if so, you can always catch an act in vegas or a number of other cities. trip trip hooray!!! an excuse to travel in my book is a good one!
