confession #1 : i own a lot of shoes. if you total up all my pairs of shoes i probably own at least 75 pairs (if not more…)
confession # 2: until tonight, my shoes have all looked like this…
that’s right, they have been piled in a heap in the bottom of one of our closets. when we moved in i didn’t know exactly how or where i wanted to store my piles of shoes and so over time they became what you see above. try finding the pair you want in that mess. fun fun! not! it’s awful. in fact, i honestly cannot even believe i am showing you all this on my blog! all well, you get the good & the ugly here at live to be inspired i guess!
yep, my shoes have horrified me and annoyed me for the last few months and if i’m honest the last few years. i just never seem to have enough room or places for all of them. now any non shoe loving person would say to just get rid of the ones you don’t have room for. any person who says that though apparently has not met me! i like options. i like variety and by goly i’ll make them fit someway somehow!
i’ve contemplated a few ways to organize my shoes since we moved in and the first brilliant idea was to separate them into summer shoes & winter shoes. you know flip flops and sandals in one pile and boots in another. that way i can put the out of season shoes down in storage and only be dealing with half my collection at time.
of course then there was the problem of fitting the remaining over 40 pairs of “in season” shoes in one itty bitty space at the bottom of our closet. i knew i couldn’t change the amount of floor space (well without some massive remodeling that i’m sure would not be in-law approved) so i decided i needed an easy easy way to build up. this is where some clear containers i found at king soopers came into play. i saw them and knew i was onto something. the only problem was that at two something a pop, that can add up rather quickly. so i decided to simply buy a few here and there when they were on sale for a few cents less. i bought four and decided to wait until i saw another sale. of course, i am so not a patient person so i was seriously contemplating just paying the dang full price and knowing my world (or at least the shoe part of it) would be better organized.
then a miracle of miracles occurred. the day before we left on our trip i was in king soopers and decided to check them just to see and maybe pick up a couple more, and they were on sale for only $1 each!!! are you kidding me? that’s over 50% off!!! i was thrilled. i literally bought every last one they had! of course then tuesday was such a hectic day that i never got around to actually organizing my shoes.
today though, today i made the time and i love the finished product. i sent my summer shoes all down to storage and put each of the winter ones in their own little container (well, most got their own container, some of the flats are sharing!).
i can now see all my shoes and they are all protected & neatly organized. no more digging through a never ending pile looking for a matching set. hooray!
doesn’t it look so much better? i decided to leave my slippers and boots out because, well, the boots won’t fit and the slippers are more for around the house. so i want them super easy to access. i literally cannot tell you how thrilled i am that these are all now organized! let me just say again hip hip hooray!
the bin to the right is all my hats and some scarves. that bin and my husbands shirts i’ve decided are my next projects to tackle.
all lined up in a row! i love it! i will never be searching for that perfect pair and having to settle on a so so pair because i can’t find the other shoe again! well, at least not anytime soon! here’s to organization!
p.s. i should clarify, i do own a lot of shoes, but in full disclosure i don’t buy super expensive shoes. my most expensive pair is maybe $50-$75 dollars. so it’s not like i’m hoarding a collection of jimmy’s choo’s (is that even spelled right?) in my closet. i love shoes, but not enough to spend hundreds on them. i’ve found i can find plenty of cute shoes without spending a fortune. if you doubt me, see the above pictures and remember that is only half my collection.
p.s.s i’ve decided that i need to find those things that go in your boots to help them stand up when they are being stored? maybe the container store would have those. i think my boots look a little sad all bent over. they potentially need a pick me up. will add to me research list.
of course now the question is, how many pairs of shoes do you all own and what is the most you’ve ever spent on a pair of shoes? spill it! i need to know i’m not the only one who could wear a different pair of shoes every day for almost three months! 🙂 there must be other’s out there?
