all right blog friends, i have a confession to make. here it goes…
i am an avid shopper & by avid i mean the movie “confessions of a shopaholic” has scenes in it that could have been taken from my own life & i’m not exaggerating, honestly i’m not.
yes, my name is cambria, and i am a shopaholic!
phew. i said it. it’s out there! now you all know my dirty little secret. it’s true. i love shopping. i love it to the point that even after my husband has said no more, i’ve still kept shopping (for a couple years now). of course, you see this wouldn’t be a problem, except right now we don’t necessarily have the means to support my shopping habit or sport if you will, because let’s face it, the way i shop really could be a sport. men have football, i have shopping. enough said. of course, my sport seems to cost quite a bit more, darn it! although, i will say it is better (& cheaper) than therapy or counseling, but that’s another story for another time.
why am i telling you all of this? well because i had an “ah ha” moments of sorts a week or two ago.
it started when i did laundry and suddenly my closet didn’t fit all of my clothes! in fact, it didn’t fit quite a few of my clothes. i began to take everything out of the closet to see how i could make everything fit better, i mean i haven’t bought that much since we moved here had i? how were they not all fitting? they all fit when we moved in, well that is once my father-in-law made some adjustments to the closet, they all fit. (yes, yes my father-in-law had to add another bar in the closet in my son’s room when we moved in to make room for all my shirts.)
so i began pulling each and every item of the closet & something happened. i started to have that “ah ha” moment. i had the thought to count each and every item in my closets, as i fill up an entire closet and half of another closet with just my clothes. plus i have more clothes in storage & drawers!
the counting began…
- 1 creme color jacket & skirt (that i wore to our luncheon on our wedding day!)
- 1 blazer in hunter green with a fur collar
- 2 faux fur vests
- 4 little black dresses
- 5 winter coats (white, brown, grey, black & barbie pink!)
- 6 pairs of dress pants and “other” pants
- 10 velour hoody sets (yes, 10!)
- 13 dresses
- 18 pairs of jeans
- 18 skirts
- 19 jackets or pieces of light outerwear
- & over 256 shirts/cardigans/sweaters/tanks/etc.
…and that doesn’t include my pajama’s, workout clothes or my three totes of summer clothes & three totes of maternity clothes that are in storage waiting for it to get warm again, or for me to be prego again.
after counting and while trying to process those numbers i sat down at the computer and quickly calculated how long it would take me to wear all 256 shirts if i wore each one a single time.
the anwer? over 8 months! that’s right, if i only wore each shirt in my closet one time, it would take me 8 months to get through my entire closet! holy guacamole! i thought i had to have counted wrong. i must have like jumped by twentys or something or skipped from 100 to 200? so i counted again. sickeningly the number was still 256 (give or take a couple shirts that may be in laundry).
i was stunned.
how was it possible that i owned that many shirts, let alone 10 velour hoody sets?! no wonder my closet was bursting at the seams. now i wish i could give a reason for having so many clothes at the age of 25. i wish i could give you all a good reason for why i have closets bursting at the seams. can i say most of them are from highschool? no. can i say one part is my skinny wardrobe, one part is my pregnant wardrobe and one part is my post prego but not yet skinny again wardrobe. nope. 95% of the clothes in my closet are my size, wearable and probably bought within the last 3-5 years. they all pretty much fit and they are all pretty cute (well in my opinion). so why in the world do i keep buying more clothes? i hate admitting this, but i even have clothes in my closet, that still have the tags on them! yep, it’s true.
it is with this “ah ha” moment and our currently small budget in mind, that i have created a challenge of sorts for myself. the challenge is, how many outfits can i make with the clothes currently in my closet. i estimate i can probably come up with at least 365 different outfits.
here are the rules to my self-challenge:
- each item must be incorporated into an outfit a minimum of once & items can be used multiple times as long as the overall outfit looks different in some way. if after wearing an item once i cannot fathom for the life of me why i even purchased it in the first place, it may be donated.
- no purchasing any new clothes during the challenge. i anticipate this means i’ll be going almost a year without doing any clothes shopping. yikes! currently i can barely go a week! i have to admit i am so not looking forward to the first few weeks of this part of the challenge. i like my shopping. a lot!
- each new outfit will be documented here on the blog and listed under my cambria’s closet button (shown above).
- outfits can be repeated, but they don’t count toward the overall total # of outfits.
there you have it. it’s pretty simple really, but i’m fairly certain there will be some very grumpy days for me as i begin my fast from clothes shopping. i think in the end though this fast/challenge will be good for me, because really, who honestly needs over 300 shirts? (that’s with adding in what’s probably in storage).
i think this will allow me to focus on what’s really important to me, to spend more time on other hobbies (since i won’t be scouring the clothes racks!) & to really fine tune my wardrobe and style, which will overall make getting dressed that much easier in the morning, because believe me, even with my ridiculous amount of clothes, i still have mornings that i go “i have nothing to wear!”… in fact that’s a lot of mornings. plus, it’ll allow me to be more creative with my outfits, as i’m sure by the time next fall rolls around i may be going crazy, heavens i may even be going crazy by the middle of january if i’m totally honest?!? 🙂
wish me luck!
ps. i am in now way advertising myself as a fashionista or even a remotely stylish dresser. if you are looking for a fashion blog, this is not one. these posts will merely be about a wife and mom attempting to find her style, control her budget & understand why she thinks she need so many clothes to be happy.
Good for you! This post reminds me of when we helped you with your laundry up at BYU-Idaho. Johnny tells me that while you are doing your clothes fast, I need to do a toy fast. <br /><br />And one last thing ….<br /><br />"It's different than the pond. Isn't it?" <br /><br />Someones been huluing.
