to coupon to not to coupon – part 1

since i’m all about making confessions this week, i thought i’d enlighten you all with one more. my motto has always been “i’d rather spend my time working than couponing, in a sense i’d rather find ways to make money than save money” and up until we moved here to colorado that was possible. i had an awesome job where i was able to work full-time and still be a mom full-time. it was literally win win. sweetest deal ever!

upon moving to colorado though our circumstances changed slightly. i do still work (if you can call taking my son for a play date twice a week and getting paid for it work!) but it is no where near full-time which means our budget has had to change quite bit & as we all know now, i’m kind of a fan of my shopping! so i’ve been seeking ways to trim the budget and still make room for the fun things.

i must admit because of this i am now eating my words about this whole “coupon thing”. holy cow! these girls know what they are doing and it’s genius! i’ve been a follower of a site called freebies2deals for a while now but have always ignored the grocery deals or anything that required any effort beyond entering a coupon code in my online shopping cart.

that is i’ve ignored them until last week and this week. last week i decided to print out melea’s “best deals of the week” for walgreen’s and decided to give coupons a fairly serious go. i made a few purchases last week and kind of got an understanding of the system at walgreen’s. i guess you could say i got my feet wet and actually thought i was doing pretty good. then this week i went for it and dove right in & realized i was so only scratching the surface the week before.

this week i decided to go all out and give myself a little challenge.

here was the challenge:

after last week’s purchases i ended up with with the following in coupons from walgreen’s:

1 – $15 stock up jingle cash coupon
2 – $  5 stock up jingle cash coupons
1 – $  5 rapid rewards manufacturers coupon

so my challenge was, how much can i purchase from walgreen’s using the above coupons and as little as possible of the $6 in cash that i had in my wallet. i took no cards or checks with me into the store, only the $6 in cash and some coins from my car.

are you ready for it? da da da don……

…and i even made a couple “mistakes” so it should have been a little more. i was actually a little floored and excited as i left the store and am now kicking myself i haven’t been doing since we got married! like i said, i am eating my words. all that stuff, and only $3.23 out of pocket! wow!
did it take time? yes. did it take some figuring out and organization? yes. did it take some patience? definitely! was it all worth it though? 100% yes.
so how did i do it? well, you’ll just have to check back tomorrow. tomorrow i’ll have it all broken down for anyone who is curious to see how it was done.
i am officially converted to coupons!
