+ = cozy winter night in!
any one else absolutely loving this time of year? last night we had a light snowfall and so we put on a movie (christmas cupid to be exact), made up some hot chocolate and enjoyed a warm cozy night in. i love nights like those! yes, the movie was an abc family movie and so the cheese factor was slightly elevated but i kinda love those kinds of movies this time of year (actually, any time). i also love that we were able to watch it through hulu on our mac. i’m telling you, if you aren’t “huluing” yet, you need to be. best. thing. ever. well, that and netflix when it comes to tv and movie viewing. (man, i really should be being paid by hulu and netflix, i probably talk about them enough!)
any way, onto the real reason i’m sure a few (well, maybe two) of you are checking back today…
i’m sure a few of you are curious as to how i managed to bring home all of the above home yesterday for only $3.23? well, let me tell you…
first i spent quite a bit of time online researching exactly how walgreen’s coupon policy works. luckily there are tons of sites that have it all broken down for you, my favorite is freebies2deals. if by the end of this post none of this is making any sense, begin your research at freebies2deals.
to begin i printed out the best deals of the week at walgreen’s & i highlighted any items that i could use or wouldn’t mind buying.
then i looked at what coupons i had. like i mentioned yesterday i had the following coupons from walgreen’s (they were coupons i received from some purchases last week when i was still trying to figure things out, i got some great deals, but no where near what i was able to do this week when i really got it down to a science):
1 – $15 jingle cash stock up coupon
2 – $ 5 jingle cash stock up coupons
1 – $ 5 rapid rewards manufacturer coupon
after reading each of the coupons i found out i could only use one jingle cash stock up coupon per transaction, but i could use the rapid rewards manufacturer coupon with any of the stock up coupons. this meant i needed to do at least 3 separate transactions in order to use up all of my coupons.
so i began putting together my transactions. i started with the smaller $5 stock up coupons for the first two transactions and used the $15 stock up and the $5 rapid rewards stock up together for the 3rd transaction.
this is how i organized my transactions at home on my computer:
and here are some notes to help decipher my wacky spreadsheet:
WC = walgreen’s coupon from the walgreen’s ad – this helped me to see how many and which coupons i needed to cut and have ready for each transaction.
RR = rapid reward a coupon that prints at the end of your purchase that you can then use for another purchase. for example in the first transaction i received a $2 RR for purchasing the hallmark cards, so i was then able to roll that $2 into my next transaction, transaction #2. the rapid rewards are advertised in store and in their ad each week. the only catch with RR is you can’t use the one you receive from purchasing two hallmark cards in order to buy two more hallmark cards. you have to spend it on something different.
now onto the logistics of it all…
as you can see my final transaction was purchased using the three register rewards i received from my 3rd transaction. it was during this transaction that i purchased things not on sale, that i didn’t have coupons for, or that i needed for our relief society service project. with this last transaction, i didn’t have an exact plan, other than to spend the entire $11.00 without going too much over. so this is exactly what i ended up purchasing with that last transaction:
1 – scarf (5.00) = $5.00
4 – matchbox cars (on sale $2 for $2) = $4.00
2 – sets of stickers (on sale $2 for $2) = $2.00
1 – scotch mailer (w/ walgreen’s coupon .39) = $0.39
Total out of Pocket after using my $11.00 in RR was: $0.96
the other three transactions were purchased as outlined above, although my math is off a dollar or so. i was estimating sales tax and if something was .99 cents rounding to a $1.00 so you can’t go off of that exact math above. i mainly just wanted to show you how i organized everything prior to beginning my shopping. overall when i total up my total cash spent on all receipts its $3.23 and my total savings is $60.30!!! i’m loving it!!!
now here is where i made a couple mistakes:
1 – if you notice there is an oil of olay item that i purchased in the 3rd transaction. there actually was a coupon that came out that was B1G1 free, but i couldn’t find it in my unorganized coupons so i missed out on getting a second one for free.
2 – on my 3rd transaction i meant to add one more super cheap item in order to be above $25.00 so that i would get another $5.00 jingle cash stock up coupon (which is a promo right now at walgreens, for every $25 you spend you get $5 back in jingle cash) to use next week. totally forgot about that though! oops! all well. no biggie.
…and there you have it. how i purchased all of the above items with coupons and under $3.23! not to shabby for a beginner.
ps. coupons, specials and sales tax can very by region so i’m not necessarily posting this so you can duplicate it exactly. i just wanted to show that saving money using coupons can be done with a little time and a lot of organization. also, you may be thinking, who has time for this right now? it’s december for heaven’s sake! well, for me that’s precisely the reason i found the time. who doesn’t need a little extra money right now? right? also, will every grocery trip be like this? no, but i do see the potential overall for saving a lot of money while we were in med school if i can continue to approach my shopping like this and make the time for it no matter the season! 🙂
*** if you are visiting from Freebies2Deals, WELCOME!!! i was so happy when melea asked me if she could feature my posts on her blog. i hope this helps those of you who, like me, might find couponing a little confusing at times. i’ve tried to break it all down as much as possible! 🙂 if you like what you’ve read you might also like the following posts i’ve written that focus on being fabulously frugal! please leave a comment and let me know you’ve stopped by!
Freebies2Deals Reader! Thank you for posting this! I am going to head over to Walgreens right now! You broke it down so I could understand it well!

Thanks!

Aubree Midgley
Thanks that makes it a little more understandable.. I have alway done smiths walmart and target deals but never dared to brave walgreens, it always confused me to much… my only question to you is did you purchase all transactions at the same time or do you pay for one transaction and then go back and get the stuff for the second transaction?thanks so much for posting this I am excited to try it
Thank you both!!! 🙂 So glad you stopped by. To answer the question, I had everything in my cart & ready for the transactions. To make it easier for the cashier I made sure to have my coupons all together for each one, as well as all the items arranged & I did tell the cashier before hand that I'd have multiple transactions. I also stayed aware of the people behind me in line and in
