i have given myself a challenge. what is the challenge?

i have challenged myself to get our grocery/home/toiletries/personal care budget for the whole family (two adults & one two year old) to under $50 a week, or $200 a month!

currently i am perfectly capable of spending two or three times that – so it will be a challenge, but one i honestly believe can be done. my ultimate goal is actually to get it under $40 a week! starting this saturday i’ll be withdrawing $50 in cash and that is what i will have on me for the next 7 days. i can pull from other weeks if there is a week with screaming good deals, but at the end of the month i’m only counting the month successful if i’ve stayed under $200. i’ll admit i’m still getting the hang of stockpiling, budgeting, etc. so i may not be 100% successful the first go round, but after a month or two i hope to consistently be under the $200!

now what do i mean by grocery/home/toiletries/personal care?

i mean:

all food
all snacks
all food storage
all cleaning/laundry supplies
all paper products (toilet paper, tissues, etc.)
all of titan’s diapers, wipes, etc.
all shampoo, make-up, shaving cream, etc.
…and anything else that might fall into those categories

now for those of you that know our living situation (we live with my in-laws) you may be thinking “sure, you’ll get it under $40 but only because you’re mooching off your in-laws, or they are buying everything for you.” let’s set the record straight now, we pay for all our food & contribute to everything else that we share – dryer sheets, dish detergent, milk, etc. there isn’t a whole lot of (if any) mooching going on.  ðŸ™‚

i should also clarify that i only cook & buy for 4 nights of the week, but on those nights i cook for 2 extra adults and a teenager, so really i believe i’m spending as much (actually probably more!) as if i was cooking all seven nights a week? make sense?

each friday i’ll post my receipts/expenses for the week and i’ll also be adding a running total to the side bar on my blog. plus, i’ll post tips, articles, ideas, etc. that i’ve found helpful in my journey to drastically cut our budget! wish me luck!

ps. if there are any of you that would like to join me in this challenge (and give yourself a similar goal, doesn’t have to be $50 a week) let me know and i’ll start adding on a link up party each week! just leave a comment letting me know you want to join in on the fun!
