i know it’s not friday yet, but i wanted to get a head start on posting about my shopping trip this week so that if you have a safeway near you, you can also get in on some of these deals.
before we moved to colorado we lived in utah and didn’t have a safeway nearby so when i saw one near us here i wasn’t familiar with the store at all. it wasn’t until the last month or so that i’ve actually started really shopping there. since moving to colorado my main shopping has been done at king soopers (which can get kind of pricey if they don’t have a promo going on) or while at my occasional trip to walmart (which i’d like to make even more occasional!).
luckily, i have found safeway to be a nice “in between” option. a good compromise between king’s and walmart.
what i love the most about safeway here is that they double coupons up to a $1.00 (every day, all day!). so if i have a .50 cent coupon at checkout another .50 cents is automatically added on, or if it’s a .25 cent coupon another .75 cents is added on. this can make for some REALLY phenomenal deals. i’m telling you it was almost like christmas when i first realized by accident that they double coupons!!! i had no clue until i was checking out at self checkout one morning. 🙂
now onto the deals. i made two trips to safeway yesterday and this is what i picked up between the two:
20 boxes of simply fruit roll ups (4 are missing, ti guy got to them and now they are various places around the house).
8 boxes of regular fruit roll ups
4 boxes of fruit gushers
6 (6 ct.) packs of danimal fruit smoothies or monkey smoothies as they are called by the little man
8 boxes of maple & brown sugar instant oatmeal
8 boxes of golden grahams (one of my favorite cereals!)
4 boxes of toaster streudel (a guilty breakfast treat)
4 hershey’s & almond chocolate bars (they were either eaten or hidden away)
1 24 oz. bottle of propel
1 2 liter of dr. pepper 10
& 1 loaf of wheat bread (also missing, left down in the kitchen)
ready for the total? total out of pocket was $32.08. my savings was $154.37 & i walked away with $9.00 in catalina’s good on future purchases as well as a few other coupons that printed for other products. my savings percentage for the day was just under 85%!!! plus, i actually made a mistake on my first trip that cost me a $3.00 catalina, so if i had done it correctly i should have had $12 in catalina’s left over.
here are the deals i used:

buy 5 betty crocker fruit snacks at .99 cents each
use (2) .50 cent/2 coupons that will each double to $1/1 (found online or in most recent GM insert)
spend 2.97 & get a $3 catalina good on next purchase
= free after catalina!

* the mistake i made in my first trip is i didn’t spread out some of the fruit snacks into separate transactions so only one $3 off catalina printed for 12 boxes. whereas had i put six on one transaction and six in another one more catalina would have printed. luckily i learned my mistake for the rest of the boxes! 🙂

buy 4 boxes of golden grahams at $1.49 each

spend $1.96 for 4 boxes
= .49 cents a box!

buy 4 boxes of golden grahams at $1.49 each
use (1) .75/1 that will double to $1/1
use $2.00 off general mills cereal that printed during a prior transaction
spend 2.96 for 4 boxes
= .74 cents a box ( i didn’t have any more .75 cent off coupons or i would have used those for the lower price.)

buy 4 boxes of quaker instant oatmeal at $1.77 when using stores in-ad coupon
use (4) $1/1 coupons from 1/2 RP or february all you magazine
spend $3.08 & receive a $2 catalina

buy 3 dannon danimal fruit smoothies at $1.77 when using stores in-ad coupon

there you have it, i think that covers every item i bought. i actually wasn’t planning on buying the hershey’s bars and kind of wish i hadn’t but i was a little out of my comfort zone during the first store visit and became very frustrated by a ridiculous store employee.
what happened is i put all my items that would produce catalina’s in one transaction and then planned to pay for the next transaction with said catalina’s. well, the employee who decided she had nothing better to do than stand over my shoulder (i was self checkout) and verify each and every little thing told me my catalina’s couldn’t be put through because i didn’t have items to cover them. which i took to mean it’s like walgreen’s where you need an item for every coupon so i grabbed the candy bars so i could use a $3 and $2 coupon and then after those were rung in she still would only push the $2 catalina through. She said I need $3 more in items to be able to use my $3 one, which in my mind, makes me think “what’s the point then? that means i just wasted $2 on candy i didn’t need, to use a $2 catalina???” weird!
i tried to explain to the employee it says $3 off your purchase, meaning the purchase as a whole as i understood it and that i’d still be over in the end for tax and all that, but she was adamant she couldn’t do it and so i told her “ok, i’m sorry i guess i wasn’t up to date on the policy” but then what go me is even then she didn’t stop and went so far as to say she was tired of people like me who are trying to scam stores? like really??? really??? i can understand if i had bad coupons or expired coupons or was not aware of the store policy at all & tried to argue with her beyond trying to explain myself, but i was there early in the morning, i was very patient with her standing over my shoulder and being rude and i even kept my eye out to make sure the other machines stayed open and a huge line wasn’t forming, plus i was very organized and quick. so really??? come on!
at this point i simply bagged up my remaining items and left. i should have asked to talk to a manager but instead i kept my $3 catalina and went to another safeway close by where the employee’s were much much nicer and knew the stores policy’s so much better! i definitely have a favorite location after yesterday! the second store let me roll my catalina’s and even gave me the full price value on the dr. pepper and propel coupons. plus, they didn’t make me feel like i was doing something wrong by standing over my shoulder and giving me the evil eye! they helped entertain my son, helped bag my groceries even though i was at self checkout and were very pleasant while i did my various separate transactions. such a better experience!!! i’m telling you if, you have a bad experience at one stores location it really is worth it to try another location if you have one close by or even relatively close by! the second store and employees that helped me will definitely be getting a thank you note written about them to corporate!!! they were phenomenal!!!
happy couponing this weekend everyone!
ps. the propel and dr. pepper coupons were actually left by another customer on the machine i was using who apparently didn’t know what catalina’s were when they checked out so that was a nice surprise indeed. lesson learned always grab everything that prints at your register!!! you never know what you might be missing out on if you don’t! 🙂
