Have a Minecraft fan who needs some motivation in the math or writing department? We were recently able to test out the Minecraft Math & Writing Units from Robbins Creative Content, LLC and they were definitely a big hit with the little man. I was even able to get him to happily practice his handwriting, something that is almost always a battle with him!

Here was our experience…

A couple Friday’s ago I pulled out some of the Minecraft unit worksheets for Titan and when Titan heard I wanted him to do some learning with me, I was immediately met with outrage over more schoolwork. And on a Friday afternoon of all days! When Titan came to his desk though and saw that it was all about Minecraft, his tune quickly changed and he said, “Oh cool! This isn’t school work, what were you talking about?”

I had him do a section that teaches about Acrostic poems and he had a lot of fun coming up with words to match the letters in Minecraft and creating his own poem. I thought it might be tricky for a 6 year old, but he was able to easily catch on, especially since it was all Minecraft related. He did so well with that part of the unit, I can’t wait to do the parts about angles and area and perimeter with him later this week!

I love having extra things like this on hand to take his learning to the next level, while still keeping it fun!  And Titan LOVES Minecraft! For him, if it’s Minecraft related it isn’t work, it’s play! So I am definitely grateful for units like this that do all the work for me and make homeschooling Titan that much easier.

If you think your kids would also enjoy these Minecraft Units, you can purchase them for the next two weeks on the Educents site for only $4.99! (Reg. $7.99)

Now onto that freebie…

The first Saturday in September we decided to meet up with some really good friends of ours at Canoe Creek State Park here in Pennsylvania for some swimming and s’more making. Our friends had been many times and told us it was a place we definitely needed to check out.

When I was being told about this place I thought for sure it would be a good 30-60 minute drive from us. So I was really surprised when I googled in and found it was just 10-15 minutes away! (I was also sad we didn’t know about it earlier in the summer!)

As luck would have it, the day we went it started to rain right as we got there. So we weren’t able to try out swimming in the lake or really do a whole lot of walking around. Just the small part though that we did experience has me counting down the days until we have good weather again!
Of course, there is supposed to be a really good sledding hill at the park as well and even some ice skating. So if we get a decent snowfall, we’ll be headed back sooner than later to experience that. Titan has been begging us all winter to pull out his sled and go sledding.
Looking online they also have horseback riding, hiking, bike trails, etc. So definitely a place we want to visit a lot more the next six months we are here.

Once we got to the park, and while Broc was helping set up everything we needed to make s’mores, Titan, Chayse & I decided to go do a little exploring. We walked into a wooded are and saw quite a number of these bright red mushrooms?!
Titan said it felt kind of like we were in the Alice and Wonderland movie! I had no idea if these mushrooms are safe or not, so we kept our distance, but they were fun to look at. (Note: I’ve tried to google these online and find out a name and more about them, but haven’t been able to find the exact same thing. I’m sure they are some basic variety though. So if you know what their called, please comment and let us know!)

After our exploring, it was time for s’mores! Oh how I love s’mores! I also love the serious look of concentration on Titan’s face as Broc is helping him to roast his marshmallow.

The rest of the s’more crew! We lucked out and ended up at the same place as some of our friends from Colorado for this internship year and it has been SO fun to have them around to do stuff with!

Titan was really disappointed he couldn’t go swimming. So when it was time to go, he asked if he could at least walk down to the lake to check it out. I loved watching Broc and him walk back hand in hand. And apparently the lake passed his inspection, because he asked how many months it would be until summer so he could finally go swimming. 🙂

All in all, it was a really fun afternoon! And we definitely couldn’t complain about the view. I seriously still can’t believe how lucky we are to have such a fun and beautiful state park so close to us.
If you are ever driving through Pennsylvania and end up in our area, make sure to add this place to your list of places to stop. It would make a great picnic stop! 🙂

Lakemont Park in Pennsylvania | Home to the World’s Oldest Known Operating Roller Coaster

Over the summer we had the chance to visit Lakemont Park here in Pennsylvania. We had driven past it a few times and Titan kept requesting to go but we kept putting it off because of Broc’s work schedule and me needing time to recuperate after having Chayse.

As the summer was coming to an end though, we knew that if we didn’t go, we would miss our window as they close after Labor Day.

One of the cool things about Lakemont Park is that they currently own and operate the WORLD’S oldest known operating roller coaster. Kind of cool, right?!

We didn’t pay to go on the roller coaster (it’s extra) since Titan wasn’t too sure about it, and truthfully neither were we. 🙂 It was cool to see though. I had no idea the world’s oldest roller coaster was here in the United States, and in Pennsylvania of all places!
Speaking of park fees and all that, if you are military and can show a Military ID, your passes are FREE! So since both Broc and I both have an ID, the only pass we had to pay for was Titan’s. And his pass was only $5.00 since we went during the week on one of their Dollar Days. So the entire day only cost us $5.00! (We also packed our own snack and drinks since they do allow outside food into the park)
Titan having fun on the train right inside the entrance.

Once we were in the park we did a quick assessment and noticed a carnival ride type area where there were a lot of spinning and “throw you around” type rides, as Titan liked to call them.
In that area Broc and I took turns going on the rides with Titan. There were bumper cars. swings, a Tilt a Whirl, a Toboggan type ride and more.
This was probably our least favorite part of the park since it was all the rides that generally make you feel sick or give you a headache. We did really like the swings though and I think Titan really enjoyed the bumper cars with Broc!

After that area we headed over to the kids area. Titan had fun going on the mini roller coaster, the carousel and a few other rides. These area was definitely a better fit for our family and for Titan. It was nice to be able to send him on a bunch of rides by himself.

Titan riding the carousel! (I know I am biased, but seriously, cutest boy around!) 🙂

After we got done with the rides (they only took us about 2 hours) we changed into our swimsuits and headed over to the water park area (it’s included in your pass if you purchase the Ride & Slide pass which is normally $9.95 or $5.00 on the Dollar Days).
Here they had a pretty fun Pirate themed play pool that was perfect for Titan to run around and play in. In fact, I told Broc that if we were going to be here another summer, I would probably consider season passes just so we could take advantage of this pool and occasionally the kids rides! I really liked that pool was shallow all the way around so there was less of a chance of something happening if I had to help Chayse with something or turn away for a second.

There was also a set of big water slides that Broc and Titan went down a few times and a regular swimming pool that was fenced off so kids couldn’t run from the shallow pool into the swimming pool, but we spent most of our time at the Pirate Pool.

…and this is what Chayse spent the entire time doing! 🙂
Overall, I think the park was fun enough, but I definitely would make sure to go on one of their $5 days if you aren’t military. I don’t know that I’d want to pay a whole lot more than $15-$20 for the day there.
And the only reason I would get the season pass would be for the Pirate Pool as there aren’t a lot of outdoor pool options here. That to me as the gem of the entire park!
