saturday morning we all slept in and then went to see toy story 3. we have learned that as long as we have popcorn and fruit punch, the little man will sit through almost any movie, although he does do better in animated ones. overall, i give him an B+ for his attention span in this movie. there was some squirming and an attempt at an escape, but overall, he was pretty happy and content to cuddle with dad and shove fistfuls of popcorn into his mouth. as far as my opinion of the movie? it was cute & i laughed at some parts, but i could have waited to see it on dvd and saved the $12. it was a fun family splurge and activity, but i think it should have just gone straight to dvd and skipped the big screen all together. just my opinion.
after the movie it was back home for nap time. during the little man’s nap i made a desperate attempt to run some last minute errands and to get us packed for our overnight staycation without giving too much of it away to broc.
at 4:30 we dropped the mini man off for an over night stay with his aunt and uncle, and then it was the start of my surprise weekend for broc. of course, my husband is too smart for his own good so he basically had it all figured out on the drive there.
first up, dinner at the roof restaurant. neither one of us had ever eaten at this restaurant which is located downtown salt lake, so i figured it would be a good dinner selection. a good “just the two of us” meal. i read some reviews online (a lot of reviews actually) the day before and actually started to get a little concerned as the reviews were very mixed. my concern proved useless though because we ended up loving it. we loved the food, the atmosphere, the dessert selection, the piano music…we loved it all. it was a very peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, perfect for catching up in.
some of my favorite menu items were the mouth watering teriyaki chicken, the ridiculously creamy and tasty mashed potatoes, & the unlimited creme brulee. of course, those were just the favorites. there was hardly anything i tried that i didn’t like other than a pork dish, i’m just not a huge pork fan though.
was it worth the price? yes! we were there for over an hour and a half, enjoying the food and talking about broc’s experiences at officer training. oh, and i can’t forget that my bread plate and diet coke were never empty for more than second or two. love that kind of service. the only downside to the dining experience is that we were there right as the sun was going down so they had the shades drawn to prevent the sun hitting everyone in the eyes. so our view was only ok, but really the dinner was about getting to talk to broc uninterrupted and so i wasn’t too concerned about the view. just make sure to take that into account if you are going there specifically for the view of the lds temple & grounds. when i called i wanted to be seated as early as possible so we could enjoy other activities after. i didn’t even think about when would be the best view. which reminds me, reservations are highly recommended. i called 3 weeks in advance and was told their 7 pm & 8 pm reservations fill up rather quickly so if you are making a reservation i recommend calling a month or so in advance, if not earlier. i imagine those times have the best view?
after dinner we headed over to the gateway. we were thinking about seeing a movie but decided instead just to do some shopping and then head to our hotel. so after a stroll enjoying the evening atmosphere, hand in hand, and a mini shopping spree at one of my all time favorite home decor stores, z gallerie (will post about my purchases/wish list later) it was off to the anniversary inn.
for those not familiar with the anniversary inn, it’s a chain of bed and breakfasts where the rooms are themed. you can see all the different room themes and take virtual tours even on their website. they have locations in boise, salt lake, & logan. we had never been, but i’ve had family who has, who enjoyed it and recommended it.
we ended up in a twilight themed room and by twilight, i do mean the vampire series. this was not my first option but, lesson learned: book far, far in advance. i booked our night almost three weeks in advance thinking i’d have a plethora of options and that was plenty early, but no, they were rather limited. apparently it’s a rather in demand place. i’d suggest booking 1-2 months in advance if you want a specific room. also, i was told to make sure to get one of the level two or three rooms. pricier, but more fun. i mean if you’re going to do it, you may as well really get the experience and go in a nicer room.
some of the photo’s we took:
regardless of the theme, we had a lot of fun on our night away, and considering we are seeing eclipse tomorrow night it did kind of tie everything together. we loved staying up late & sleeping in, the comfy king sized bed, the super soft robes, and the jetted two person jacuzzi with a water feature. plus, the sparkling apple cider already chilling when we arrived and the breakfast delivered to the room the next morning were positively delightful and scrumptious. i would definitely go again and try out some of the other themed rooms. it was a nice staycation, a nice night away just the two of us. if you are looking for a romantic and fun night away without traveling too far from home, i’d highly recommend both the roof and the anniversary inn.
that wraps up the weekend in review. happy tuesday everyone! it’s back to real life for us…sort of!
