yesterday we attended broc’s white coat ceremony. he is now officially “student doctor broc parker, second lieutenant in the united states air force” although i have told him if he ever introduces himself as such from here forward, i’ll never go out in public with him again. 🙂
it’s official. there’s no turning back now, well not in my book. i told him he had until the ceremony to change his mind, otherwise he better stick it out and be getting his long white coat in 7 years. i learned at the event that while he was given his “white coat”, student doctors are given a shorter one. interesting fact for ya, just in case you ever need a random fact. they don’t get the long white coat until they are actually attending physicians.
it was an incredible experience and one thing is for sure, it’s the big leagues now. i asked broc what the dress code was for the event and he said “whatever. they told us to wear professional, but our families can wear anything.” so all night the night before i’m contemplating what to wear – dressy shorts and a cardigan, a summery dress, a more suit like dress…i mean what do you wear to a white coat ceremony?
i finally decided on a summery pink dress i bought a few weeks ago during my park city shopping but then all morning i felt really overdressed – that is until we got to the event. so glad i went with the dress and with overdressing versus undressing. broc tends to understate things a bit, so i’m glad i’m learning to roll with it and compensate for it. according him to him, jeans would have been fine. jeans would not have been fine!
enough about my outfit though! the ceremony was quick and to the point, just the way i like them & it was impressive to listen to the speakers and see all 160 students as their received their white coats & take the oath. what a sight!
i think the thing that stood out to me the most at the ceremony though was a prayer offered at the beginning of the ceremony that recognized God as the ultimate physician. i was very impressed that RVU is a school that recognizes that no matter how much we learn about the body – we still won’t know it all. God truly is the ultimate physician. there were other parts of the prayer i wish i could remember as it was all worded so eloquently but the basis was recognizing God as the ultimate physician and thanking him for the gifts and talents these students have been given and may he guide their lives and their learning, as well as help those who are also embarking on the journey with them to know how to adjust to medical school life.
i feel good about our decision to move here to colorado and attend RVU, especially after yesterday. we debated, we worried, we stressed over choosing a school, but the more i learn about this school and it’s methods, beliefs, etc. the more i feel it truly is the best fit for us.
so congratulations student doctor broc parker, second lieutenant in the united states air force. you have worked hard to get here. you have succeeded where other’s have failed. you have done your best and now you are reaping the rewards – although it probably won’t feel like a reward starting tomorrow when the real work begins!
other’s say getting into the marriott business school at byu is ridiculously hard
other’s say medical school is a long shot
other’s said the air force is next to impossible to get into and the hardest branch to be accepted into
other’s say someone can’t work & do school
other’s say someone can’t work, do school, and have a kid
i hear a lot of people say a lot of things about what you have accomplished and nine times out of ten i am taken by surprise. i had no idea how hard the marriott business school at byu is to get into until other’s told me and congratulated me on your success. i didn’t know that the air force is the hardest branch of the military to get accepted by until told by other’s as well. i simply had no clue.
i didn’t know these things, because you just do them & even make it look easy. you don’t worry about the difficulty, you don’t worry about whether it’s possible or not, you simply go, do and provide. you say you are going to do something and then you do it, most of the time exceptionally well! it is one of the main reasons i married you, and i wouldn’t expect any less from you. i can’t wait to see what you continue to accomplish in the years to come. i remembered yesterday as i watched you reciting the oath, the night we talked about getting married and how i decided i could marry you because you were truly my equal in all things & i knew together we could continue to learn and grow and challenge each other to be our best.
yes, congratulations broc! here’s to the next four years! xo cambria
